One of the 300 remaining drive-in theaters in the United States finds its home on Highway on The North Andy Griffith Parkway (Hwy 52 North in Mount Airy, N.C. Since 1958, the number of drive-ins has dropped 87 percent from 4,063, according to the National Association of Theater Owners, but Mount Airy’s drive-in remains popular.
Don L. Davis opened the Bright Leaf Drive-In in 1955, and since its opening, people from the surrounding areas have enjoyed the outdoor theater. It is one of 9 drive-ins in North Carolina. It has a 300 car capacity.
The Bright Leaf Drive-In is open year round. Open Wednesday-Sunday 2 movies. Admission- $5 Dollars and Adults children 10 and under are FREE.
