Schedule: First Saturday in October

West of Mount Airy near the community of Lowgap‚ a festival honors the distinctive Appalachian deep-dish fruit or sweet potato pie called "sonkers." Sponsored by the Surry County Historical Society‚ the event benefits the preservation of the two-hundred-year-old Edwards-Franklin House. Visitors can hear lots of old-time music and also eat lots of food‚ including‚ of course‚ sonkers. Bring a lawn chair for your own comfortable seating.

Directions: From the intersection with I-77‚ go west on NC-89 one mile; then go left (south) on Beulah Road for one mile; and finally go right (west) on Haystack Road. The Edwards-Franklin House is three and one-half miles on the right.
