The Edwards-Franklin House was built by Gideon Edwards in 1799 and later occupied by Congressman Meshack Franklin. Purchased and restored by the Surry County Historical Society in 1973, the house is open to visitors the second Saturday and Sunday during April through September. A Sonker Festival featuring old-time music and deep fruit dish pies (sonkers) is held the first Saturday in October. The house has original decorative painting on the doors, mantels and wainscoting.
The Edwards-Franklin House is located at 4132 Haystack Road, Low Gap, North Carolina 27024. (Second Saturday and Sunday of each month) Open House at Edwards Franklin House 1pm-5pm. Admission is FREE.

West of Mount Airy near the community of Lowgap‚ a festival honors the distinctive Appalachian deep-dish fruit or sweet potato pie called "sonkers." Sponsored by the Surry County Historical Society‚ the event benefits the preservation of the two-hundred-year-old Edwards-Franklin House. Visitors can hear lots of old-time music and also eat lots of food‚ including‚ of course‚ sonkers. Bring a lawn chair for your own comfortable seating.
Directions: From the intersection with I-77‚ go west on NC-89 one mile; then go left (south) on Beulah Road for one mile; and finally go right (west) on Haystack Road. The Edwards-Franklin House is three and one-half miles on the right. |
