The Old City Jail, 215 City Hall St., Mount Airy, is a local re-creation of “The Courthouse” seen in so many episodes of the popular television series The Andy Griffith Show.
The Old City Jail was Mount Airy’s real jail for many years. This site served as Mount Airy’s Municipal Building, which housed many city offices and the Mount Airy Police Department.
Several years ago, city offices were moved to a new Municipal Building on South Main Street. A local business moved into this structure. Admission is free.
The Old City Jail is also the site of the annual Mayberry Days Proclamation by the Mayor of Mount Airy. The vintage 1962 Ford Galaxie squad car sitting out front lets you know the defenders of Mayberry are never far away.
Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. Call 336-789-4636 or 800-576-0231.
