The Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce and the Mount Airy Visitors Center work together to provide groups a basic orientation tour of Mount Airy and surrounding areas. The two-hour orientation tour begins at the Main Oak Emporium, which house the Andy Griffith Museum. Visitors view a 15-minute video and examine exhibits about Mount Airy’s other legends and attractions.
The group boards the bus or van with their step-on tour guide to learn about life in Mount Airy and the “Mayberry State of Mind.” Mayberry fans will see SNAPPY LUNCH, the Old City Jail, Floyd’s City Barber Shop, the Andy Griffith Playhouse, TV Land Landmark Andy & Opie Statue, Andy’s Homeplace, Mayberry Courthouse and Wally's Service Station. You may also see special exhibits on Donna Fargo and the Siamese Twins located at the Robert Smith House. Also plan to visit the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History located across from the Main Oak Emporium.
The basic tour also includes a trip inside the gates of the world’s largest open face granite quarry, which makes its home in Mount Airy. Visitors will learn about Mount Airy’s history and view granite structures, such as churches, businesses, homes, the Mount Airy Municipal Building and the Mount Airy Post Office.
The Robert Smith House staff also gives a guided tour of the 1903 Victorian style Gertrude Smith House as a part of the basic orientation tour. Groups can enjoy a variety of restaurants and lodging establishments in Mount Airy, as well as enjoy shopping in Mount Airy’s Downtown and Colonial Mayberry Mall.
Extra tour options include visiting the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, the antebellum Moore House, and Pilot Mountain State Park, the burial site of the original Siamese twins and Horne Creek Living Historical Farm, and area vineyards. The Chamber of Commerce will provide further information about these options.
Your group tour can also include entertainment provided by the Surry Arts Council. Surry County also hosts many festivals, fairs and special events, which can complete your group's stay. Give Charles Vaughn a call at 866-786-1137 to set up your trip to Mount Airy!
