Ararat River Fishing

Thanks to a multimillion-dollar restoration project, a two-mile section of the river was designated as delayed-harvest stream, which is posted with black-and-white signs. Ararat River Fishing is open from Oct. 1 to May 31 with a catch-and-release system is in effect and is restricted to single-hook artificial lures. From June 1 until September 30, the status changes to hatchery-supported and a daily limit of seven fish is in effect.

The Ararat River Greenway is a paved 2.2-mile paved Greenway Trail from Riverside Park to Tharrington Park )beside Tharrington Elementary School). This section of the Ararat River has been restored and is a great area for wildlife viewing, kayaking, canoeing, and trout fishing. The entire length of the Greenway Trail is stocked with trout. There are multiple canoe/kayak/tube launch stations along the trail as well as multiple areas for sitting by the river. A restroom is available halfway down the trail, off on a side trail to the environmental park. Restrooms are also available at Riverside Park.
When exploring, look for TRACK (Trails Ridges and Active Caring Kids) Trail Adventure guides along the trail or online at www.kidsinparks.com. Created by the Blue Ridge Foundation, the guides offer educational opportunities for children.

Beechnut Family Campground is located just a few minutes from downtown Mount Airy off of Interstate 75 and four miles from Interstate 77. Big Elkin Creek is a part of the N.C. Wildlife Commission’s Community Fishing Program and is an excellent location for channel catfish. Bank fishing is available at the Elkin Recreation Center along with handicapped-accessible areas. The stream is stocked monthly from May until September with 10- to 12-inch channel catfish. Nearby, there is a playground and public restrooms.

The Blue Ridge Parkway connects the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. The hatchery-supported Fisher River is a tributary of the Yadkin River. Trout can be found in the northern sections of Fisher River along with smallmouth and largemouth bass in the lower sections of the river. A public access area is located at Fisher River Park near Dobson. Anglers can harvest up to seven trout per day on hatchery-supported rivers from April until the end of February. Fisher River Park features three baseball and softball fields, one regulation soccer field, and one peewee soccer field. Built in 1938, the Earle Theatre has remained much the same as it did in the 1930s. The old-time music heritage hall is open daily until 3 p.m. Every Thursday night at 7 p.m. is a free bluegrass/old-time jam session – anyone is welcome to bring an instrument and join in the fun! The Earle Theatre is also home to the second-longest-running live radio show in the nation, broadcast on WPAQ 740 AM – the Merry-Go-Round show, every Saturday at 11 a.m. for $5 per person, with a jam session after the show.

Kapps Mill Kayak Rentals is located near Dobson, NC on the Mitchell River, which is very good river for the first timers – mostly shallow water, flowing at a slow pace with no whitewater.
There are a few little runs on this river, but nothing scary.
They offer a 45 min. trip called the mini-run for $10.00 per kayak and also a 2-hour run for $20.00 per kayak.

The Little Fisher River, from the Virginia state line to the N.C. 89 bridge, is a 7.8-mile hatchery-supported stream stocked with brook, rainbow, and brown trout between March and July. Anglers can harvest up to seven trout per day on hatchery-supported rivers from April until the end of February. Hatchery-supported trout waters are open from 7 a.m. on the first Saturday in April until one-half hour after sunset on the last day of February the following year.

Mitchell River Fishing includes a delayed-harvest stream, which means 0.6 miles of the river from S.R. 1333 to the S.R. 1330 bridge below Kapps Mill Dam is a catch-and-release system from Oct. 1 until May 31. Starting on June 1, the status changes to a hatchery-supported designation with a daily limit of seven fish. A public access point is provided on Zephyr-Mountain Park Road, off of Mount Park Road, just north of Elkin.

Paul’s Creek is a 2.5-mile hatchery-supported stream located in the northern-most part of Surry County from the Virginia line to 0.3 miles below S.R. 1625 bridge. The stream is stocked with brook, rainbow, and brown trout between March and July. Trout season in this section opens on the first Saturday in April and has a seven-trout-per-day limit.  Trout season closes on the last day of February. Come enjoy Paul’s Creek Fishing!

Rising 1,400 feet above the countryside below, the Native Americans called it “Jomeoke,” meaning “great guide” or “pilot.” Pilot Mountain State Park is known for its Big Pinnacle peak seen from all directions in the park. The mountain section of Pilot Mountain State park contains the visitor center, access to the pinnacles, parking, picnic area, camping, and restrooms. Rocky Forest River Run is owned and operated by a local couple who have always enjoyed the water. They offer kayaking, canoeing, and tubing, with shuttle service, on 2 to 6 hour trips. Choose from kayaking, canoeing or tubing! They offer rentals as well as shuttle service for those who have their own boats/tubes. Each self-guided rental includes a boat of choice, paddle or oars, and a PFD.

Known as one of the best equestrian trails in North Carolina, Sauratown Trails is a 35-mile path connecting Pilot Mountain State Park to Hanging Rock State Park. Camping is not permitted on the trail, but there are several locations that offer overnight camping and cabin rentals with horse boarding. Also, camping is available at both Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock state parks.

Scoops Ice Cream & Such is a hidden gem in a rural area of Surry County, yet located close to I-77, just off of Hwy 89 (W. Pine Street). Scoops is home to a unique ice cream parlor in a converted camper van, with plenty of seating on multiple levels of patio, decorated with beautiful metal sculptures created by artist and Scoops’ owner Chazz Elstone. Grab a sundae or ice cream cone and take a stroll through the sculpture garden in the trees, located across the yard from the ice cream parlor. You will be delighted at the unique and symbolic art located on the nature path that meanders through the forest, complete with a beautiful forest chapel!

Scoops is open seasonally, April through September on Wednesday through Saturday from 12 to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 9 p.m.

It’s not hard to miss the 600-foot igneous dome that rises 2,305 feet above the forest floor at Stone Mountain State Park. Park activities include camping, educational programs, exhibits, fly fishing, picnicking, rock climbing, hiking, and horseback riding. There are two loop roads with 88 sites for tent campers and recreational vehicles. Some sites have water and electric hookups along with a dump station for RVs.

In total, there are 8 trails totaling 16 miles that wait at Stone Mountain State Park, a 600-foot, 25-mile square dome of exposed granite. In addition to trails that cross Stone Mountain itself, others wind throughout the park, past scenic rivers, waterfalls, and up the Blue Ridge to make a connection with the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Devil’s Garden overlook.

Surry County has over 500 marked designated bikeways along several major loops, including the Dobson-Elkin Loop, the Lowgap-Mount Airy Loop, the Westfield-Mount Airy Loop, the Holly Springs-Siloam Connector, the Rockford Connector, and the State Park Connector. Many of loops pass through wine country and farmland. Enjoy the Surry Scenic Bikeway near the Blue Ridge Mountains and Yadkin Valley Wine Region.

Also a part of the N.C. Wildlife Commission’s Community Fishing Program, Tumbling Rock Reservoir in Westwood Park is stocked with channel catfish. Largemouth bass, redear sunfish, and bluegill were previously stocked into Tumbling Rock Reservoir. This is a great location for bank fishing with a handicapped-accessible fishing pier.

Westwood Park features a 9-hole, par 34 disc golf course with plenty of green grass, elevation, and trees for difficult shots. The park is a wooded site with nature trails, lighted ball fields, playground equipment, mountain biking trails, restroom facilities, and a community-fishing reservoir. The six miles of mountain biking trails takes riders through steep climbs and descents along with log and creek crossings.

Westwood Park Disc Golf Course in Mount Airy features a 9-hole, par 34 disc golf course with plenty of green grass, elevation, and trees for difficult shots. There are great fairways with twenty-foot-wide swaths through trees with intended flight paths.

Westwood Park Mountain Biking Trail is located on the outskirts of downtown Mount Airy. It features a 5-mile mountain biking trail with lots of sweeping single-track sections and is an excellent trail for beginning mountain bikers. The path has several interesting mounds to ride up along with a few log crossings and a super-fast rolling downhill section.
