Ararat River Fishing

Thanks to a multimillion-dollar restoration project, a two-mile section of the river was designated as delayed-harvest stream, which is posted with black-and-white signs. Ararat River Fishing is open from Oct. 1 to May 31 with a catch-and-release system is in effect and is restricted to single-hook artificial lures. From June 1 until September 30, the status changes to hatchery-supported and a daily limit of seven fish is in effect.

The Ararat River Greenway is a paved 2.2-mile paved Greenway Trail from Riverside Park to Tharrington Park )beside Tharrington Elementary School). This section of the Ararat River has been restored and is a great area for wildlife viewing, kayaking, canoeing, and trout fishing. The entire length of the Greenway Trail is stocked with trout. There are multiple canoe/kayak/tube launch stations along the trail as well as multiple areas for sitting by the river. A restroom is available halfway down the trail, off on a side trail to the environmental park. Restrooms are also available at Riverside Park.
When exploring, look for TRACK (Trails Ridges and Active Caring Kids) Trail Adventure guides along the trail or online at www.kidsinparks.com. Created by the Blue Ridge Foundation, the guides offer educational opportunities for children.

Beechnut Family Campground is located just a few minutes from downtown Mount Airy off of Interstate 75 and four miles from Interstate 77. Beechnut Family Campground has water and electric hook-ups along with tenting areas for tent campers. The campground has three fishing ponds and a volleyball court. There are three swimming pools along with the Hurricane Hazel water slide. Overnight and day passes are available.


Big Elkin Creek

Big Elkin Creek is a part of the N.C. Wildlife Commission’s Community Fishing Program and is an excellent location for channel catfish. Bank fishing is available at the Elkin Recreation Center along with handicapped-accessible areas. The stream is stocked monthly from May until September with 10- to 12-inch channel catfish. Nearby, there is a playground and public restrooms.


Fisher River Fishing

The hatchery-supported Fisher River is a tributary of the Yadkin River. Trout can be found in the northern sections of Fisher River along with smallmouth and largemouth bass in the lower sections of the river. A public access area is located at Fisher River Park near Dobson. Anglers can harvest up to seven trout per day on hatchery-supported rivers from April until the end of February. Known for having one of the largest swimming pools in the region, Homeplace Recreational Park is a full-service campground with a swimming pool, separate diving pool, rope swing, waterslide, and kiddy play area. Other activities include game room, volleyball, playground, basketball, horseshoes, fishing and miniature golf. There are 150 campsites with full hook-ups. Kapps Mill Kayak Rentals is located near Dobson, NC on the Mitchell River, which is very good river for the first timers – mostly shallow water, flowing at a slow pace with no whitewater.
There are a few little runs on this river, but nothing scary.
They offer a 45 min. trip called the mini-run for $10.00 per kayak and also a 2-hour run for $20.00 per kayak.
Family rates or group rate available for 4 or more people. Must call by 9 a.m. the morning of the day you plan on kayaking to check for availabity and to reserve kayaks. They offer top-sit kayaks, sit-in kayaks and two-person kayaks. Call 336-366-2509 for reservations or more information.


Little Fisher River

The Little Fisher River, from the Virginia state line to the N.C. 89 bridge, is a 7.8-mile hatchery-supported stream stocked with brook, rainbow, and brown trout between March and July. Anglers can harvest up to seven trout per day on hatchery-supported rivers from April until the end of February. Hatchery-supported trout waters are open from 7 a.m. on the first Saturday in April until one-half hour after sunset on the last day of February the following year.

Mitchell River Fishing includes a delayed-harvest stream, which means 0.6 miles of the river from S.R. 1333 to the S.R. 1330 bridge below Kapps Mill Dam is a catch-and-release system from Oct. 1 until May 31. Starting on June 1, the status changes to a hatchery-supported designation with a daily limit of seven fish. A public access point is provided on Zephyr-Mountain Park Road, off of Mount Park Road, just north of Elkin.


Paul’s Creek Fishing

Paul’s Creek is a 2.5-mile hatchery-supported stream located in the northern-most part of Surry County from the Virginia line to 0.3 miles below S.R. 1625 bridge. The stream is stocked with brook, rainbow, and brown trout between March and July. Trout season in this section opens on the first Saturday in April and has a seven-trout-per-day limit.  Trout season closes on the last day of February. Come enjoy Paul’s Creek Fishing!

Rocky Forest River Run is a Kayak, Canoe and Tube outfitter in Elkin who welcome everyone to come paddle with RFRR and enjoy the Yadkin River’s winding journey through Wilkes, Surry and Yadkin counties.

Rocky Forest River Run is owned and operated by a local couple who have always enjoyed the water. They offer kayaking, canoeing, and tubing, with shuttle service, on 2 to 6 hour trips. Choose from kayaking, canoeing or tubing! They offer rentals as well as shuttle service for those who have their own boats/tubes. Each self-guided rental includes a boat of choice, paddle or oars, and a PFD.

For those who enjoy fishing, bring your rods and reels on the trip! There are a few shoals along the way that create some fun on your trip! Don’t forget to watch for wildlife, including birds, ducks, herons, geese, and turtles! They are open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Call for reservations!

Largemouth bass, redear sunfish, and bluegill were previously stocked into Tumbling Rock Reservoir. This is a great location for bank fishing with a handicapped-accessible fishing pier.
