Celebrate the anniversary of The Andy Griffith Show in the actor’s hometown of Mount Airy, N.C. Stars including Maggie Peterson as "Charlene Darling," Doug Dillard of the "Darlings," Howard Morris as "Ernest T. Bass," George Lindsey as "Goober," Betty Lynn as "Thelma Lou," LeRoy Mack NcNees of "The Country Boys" and George Spence as "Guest in the House" have made appearances during Mayberry Days. Andy Griffith has also been in Mount Airy during Mayberry Days!
Each year, the four-day festival includes a golf tournament (Thursday afternoon), two concerts by The Doug Dillard Band (Friday afternoon and evening), the Mayberry Days Parade (Saturday morning) and "Colonel Tim’s Talent Time" (Saturday night). Other repeating events are a Mayberry trivia contest, a pie-eating contest, "Mrs. Wiley’s Tea," free walking tours and live Bluegrass music.
David "The Mayberry Deputy" Browning and Allan "Floyd" Newsome, the Mayberry Days lookalikes, can be found throughout the festival, whcih is sponsored by Surry Arts Council.
Visitors planning to attend Mayberry Days are advised to make arrangements early. Local motels and B&Bs begin filling up for the weekend months in advance. The more popular ticketed events, such as The Doug Dillard Band concerts and "Colonel Tim's" sell out early.
Mayberry Days is a festival for the whole family with activities and events for the fans to those who long for the days when life was simple and the Sheriff didn't carry a gun. Enjoy a bottle of pop while playing checkers, relax to music from many local bands playing the same songs that Andy grew up with in Mount Airy and be sure to get your picture with the TV Land statue of Andy & Opie. There is so much to do during the festival, but there is always time to slow down and enjoy what Mayberry means to you.
